The 20 Buck Spin Festival II was once again created through the combined efforts of Scott Verrastro / Clavius Productions and I, Scott Nussman / Detournemont Productions. Our focus on the Twenty Buck Spin II was to have a more diverse lineup than the year before by making it a 3 night event, and incorporating more bands of an experimental nature and those that were on tour at the time. Once again like the year before, Friday proved to have a disappointing turnout despite the calibur of the bands playing. Perhaps, there was a "more fashionable" dance party going on, which has always been the virus in the DC music scene: a gross trendiness and "scenesterism" at these dance nights has taken precedence amongst the greater popluace over live, touring musicians to the benefit of clubs that care more about capital than the DIY ethic. In retrospect, I'm sure many people sulk in the fact that they missed such an amazing show as Unearthly Trance, Mouthus, Hyatari (who rarely ever perform live), and Test-Site. The Saturday of the fest still remained the predominate day where we focused on the local doom scene, which has been a primary part of the festival. The DC doom circuit has proven to be a family with many smiling, familiar faces popping up at shows, and this was no exception with a decent turnout filled with beer-laden chums pumping their fist to heavy rhythms. The fest finished up the day prior to Halloween with DMBQ stacking up their drumset in the middle of the floor of DC9, and then knocking it over to conclude the show. They gave an amazing finale performance, and this show sadly marked China's (DMBQ's drummer as well as the drummer of Shonen Knife) second to last show of her life before she died in a tragic car crash on I-95. RIP China.
